February 19, 2010, changed my life forever.
I got in a car accident that left me in a coma for six months. When I woke up, I was scared. I had nothing. My kids were taken away from me, I couldn’t speak, and I couldn’t walk.
It was hell. I had to rebuild my life.>/span>
Despite these challenges, I’ve always carried a deep sense of purpose: to inspire and uplift others, especially my Indigenous community.
Cornerstone Housing for Women provides opportunities for people to grow, heal, and rebuild their lives. Will you help others rebuild their lives this Mother’s Day?
Your support allows Cornerstone to continue offering women and gender-diverse people a safe place to stay access to essential resources and the opportunity to find strength through community.
I’m a mother, a survivor and a voice for my community.
Born and raised on the Plains Cree Reservation, my journey has been anything but easy. From facing unimaginable trauma at a young age to surviving a life-changing car accident, I have been able to grow, regain my strength and rebuild my life.
This Mother’s Day, you can honor the mothers, daughters, and grandmothers in your life by making a lasting impact on the lives of women who are working hard to rebuild their lives.
Your gift today will provide the tools, resources, and support that can change a life – just like you helped me.
I moved to Cornerstone in April 2024, and I felt so happy to have a home of my own.
Before I moved in, I was living with a partner for seven years, who helped to take care of me. Eight years before that, after my accident, I lived in nine different long-term care homes. That was tough, always having to move, never feeling like I was home, and having to re-learn how to live in my new body.
I love having my own home now.
The staff, volunteers, and community partners are great at Cornerstone.
They provide women like me with the safety and support we need to heal from trauma, build our lives back, and achieve our dreams.
Cornerstone is more than a roof over my head; it’s a community where I have regained my independence.
I have a home of my own, and there are supports here that help us along our journey.
At Cornerstone, I have found more than a home – I’ve found a place to thrive. And that’s because of you.
Now, I like participating in fitness classes. I go to programming with Minwaashin Lodge and Wabano, and I also join in activities at Cornerstone.
I have always been a go-getter. My accident couldn’t stop me from getting back to what I love.
Two weeks before my accident, I was a part of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics opening ceremony as a fancy dancer. I was so proud to represent my Indigenous Peoples at the Olympics. I was excited when they chose me. I’ve always loved dancing. It was amazing!
Cornerstone has helped me grow and dream again.
My dream now is to travel to every reserve in Canada, that’s 3100 reserves, offering public speaking engagements that inspire Indigenous People to embrace self-love, healing, and strength. I plan to share the Salvation Prayer and conduct fitness programming to help empower others.
This Mother’s Day, you can help women at Cornerstone grow and rebuild their lives.
Your generous donation will provide safe housing, essential services, and specialized care for women and gender-diverse people who are on their own journey of healing.
Unfortunately, I am only close with one of my kids now, and I am grateful for her. My kids mean everything to me. Being a mother means you have responsibilities, you have to be the best person you can be. That’s what I strive to be every day.
Together, let’s create a future where every woman and gender-diverse person has the opportunity to grow, heal, and live with dignity and hope.
