Volunteering at Cornerstone

As a Cornerstone volunteer, you are a vital piece of the puzzle that helps women break the cycle of poverty and homelessness, to build a new life of hope and stability.

We are privileged to have lots of volunteers share their time with Cornerstone. As such, availability of volunteer opportunities varies. We always welcome the opportunity to discuss new ideas and projects to accommodate your special skill sets!

We actively recruit volunteers from equity-seeking groups that represent the communities we serve: new Canadians, indigenous people, LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, and those with lived experience of homelessness and housing insecurity.

There are many different ways to get involved as a volunteer at Cornerstone. From ongoing regular shifts, to occasional support or working at special events. From spending time with residents, to sorting donations, to serving meals. There's something for everyone!

At Cornerstone, we work with women who are struggling with trauma, mental health issues and substance use amongst many other experiences. As such, we screen all volunteers and staff carefully, to uphold the highest standards of confidentiality, appropriate boundaries and supportive, sustainable relationships.

Our typical volunteer application process follows these steps:

  1. Please submit an online application - found here.
  2. If your interest and availability match any available volunteer assignments we have open, we will follow up with you to confirm your continued interest. From there we book an in-person meeting, where we can discuss available roles, ask questions of each other and determine if this is a good fit.
  3. We require a completed Police Reference Check either Level II or III (depending on the volunteer assignment). A volunteer letter from Cornerstone will be issued for the Police Check upon request.
  4. Once these steps are complete, we will work together to complete the onboarding process and get you started!

Please contact Rosemary Jones, Coordinator of Students and Volunteers, with any questions or concerns about volunteering at Cornerstone.
