Mark Holzman

Past Chair

Mark Holzman has enjoyed a 32 year career at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in housing policy, research and programs. He is a board member and past-president of Temple Israel (Jewish Reform Congregation of Ottawa) and a member of All Saints Anglican Church - Westboro. Mark is a lifetime Ottawa resident who enjoys skiing, exploring Ottawa neighbourhoods and spending time with his three adult children and two grandsons.

Katrina Draper

Katrina is a policy analyst and conflict resolution specialist with both Canadian and international experience, including work in Australia and Rwanda. Her background in mediation and conflict resolution, combined with specialized training in political management, makes her uniquely skilled in developing advocacy and strategic plans.

Katrina brings extensive experience in advocacy, non-profit work, fundraising, digital campaigns, and grassroots organizing. Katrina is an expert at recognizing what voices need to be at the table and ensuring they get there. In her professional role, Katrina works in policy and regulatory affairs, providing timely and strategic advice on the impacts of government decisions across diverse sectors.

Katrina holds an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Waterloo and a Master’s degree in Political Management from Carleton University.

Mark Barnes

Mark Barnes is the pharmacist/owner of Respect Rx Pharmacy in Ottawa and a passionate advocate for a respectful approach to substance use and mental health treatment. Mark has worked with Cornerstone for many years, providing medications and education to staff and residents.

He is a longtime champion of harm reduction and has always supported Cornerstone’s advocacy efforts, capital campaigns, and fundraising events. He is a board member of Pathways to Recovery and has served on many local and national advisory panels on overdose prevention and prescription drug misuse.

His focus has been on providing proper medical care to vulnerable populations, and Mark believes medical wellness is an important step toward breaking the cycle of homelessness. He hopes to help guide Cornerstone through the challenges of the current housing crisis, the worsening toxic drug supply, and shifting government policies.

Marlene Haines

Marlene Haines, NP, PhD, is a Nurse Practitioner and researcher with nearly a decade of experience providing care to marginalized populations in Ottawa. Her clinical work focuses on substance use, outreach, and women’s health. She supports individuals who are unhoused as well as those in supportive housing, including residents at 44 Eccles and 314 Booth.

She is also an Adjunct Independent Research Professor at Western University, where her program of research focuses on drug policy, the drug poisoning crisis, and harm reduction services. Marlene has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and secured more than $1,000,000 in research funding. She brings both clinical and academic expertise to her work and is deeply committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation through the application of trauma-informed and anti-oppressive lenses.

Christine Irvine

Christine Irvine is an experienced board director, fundraiser, and event coordinator in the Ottawa area.

After a long career in sales, marketing, and hospitality management, Christine relocated to Ottawa from Toronto in 2000. Since moving to Ottawa, Christine has dedicated a large portion of her energies to a number of Ottawa charities, including the Ottawa Women’s Health Council – founding the Shirley E Greenberg Women’s Health Centre at the Riverside Hospital, The Hnatyshyn Foundation for the Arts, Harmony House Women’s Shelter, the Community Laundry COOP and most recently she served as Chair and Treasurer of the OutCare Foundation Board. She is currently a member and chairs the governance committee of the Bruyere Health Foundation board. Christine seeks to support Cornerstone’s fundraising campaigns, events, and advocacy initiatives.

Sarah Birkett - Martin

Sarah Birkett - Martin is a retired Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA).  She has over 30 years of work experience in financial services, technology services and not-for-profit sectors where she held senior leadership roles in finance, internal controls and risk management. 

She enjoys spending her leisure time gardening, cycling, reading and travelling and with her church community. Sarah believes strongly in giving back to the community through her volunteer work.

Nancy Gardiner

Nancy Gardiner has recently been appointed Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada after holding senior leadership positions with the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (President), Women and Gender Equality Canada, and Employment and Social Development Canada (Service Canada). She holds MBA and BSc degrees and has experience in operational transformation, strategic planning, policy development, and partnership relationships. She wants to increase her volunteer efforts towards gender equality and addressing the particular needs of women experiencing homelessness and trauma in Ottawa.

Honorata Bittner

Honorata Bittner is Executive Vice-President & Chief Strategy and People Officer at The Ottawa Hospital. She provides strategic counsel, facilitates cross departmental relationships, oversees the hospital’s people strategy and is secretary to the hospital Board of Governors. She is the current board chair of Ottawa Inner City Health and a board member of Harmony House, Ottawa’s 2nd stage transitional shelter for women and their children fleeing domestic violence. Honorata strongly believes in giving back to her community through volunteer work that supports marginalized individuals so they have an equitable opportunity to reach their full potential.

Tricia Goulbourne

Tricia was appointed as the Chief Audit and Evaluation Executive at Justice Canada in 2024. Here, she is focused on strengthening the accountability framework in the department through providing independent, value-added and informed advice on risk, governance, controls, and program performance.

Prior to joining Justice Canada, Tricia worked for several years at various federal government departments where she held positions in Internal Audit, Risk Management, and Finance.
Question-asker, status-quo pusher, client-focused, and a dynamic leader, Tricia eagerly seeks opportunities to support community endeavors with her skills and expertise. She is drawn to Cornerstone’s trauma-informed approach and recognition of the diverse and intersecting challenges faced by women.

Tricia is a Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor (CPA, CMA, CIA). She holds a master’s degree in International Trade and International Finance from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (Carleton University) and an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from Western University.

 Susan Scotti

Susan Scotti is a coach and board director. A recently retired senior executive, she has extensive experience in the public, private and not for profit sectors having served as  the Executive Vice President of the Business Council of Canada and as a senior executive with the Government of Canada for over 30 years engaged in policy and program development and implementation. Susan has been  responsible for national policies and programs in areas as diverse as culture and broadcasting, the integration, and participation of ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, and seniors, Indigenous issues and land claims, public pensions, and homelessness.

Susan is a coach to aspiring and current executives and an active volunteer in her community. She currently serves as a director on several not-for-profit boards. She is the Vice Chair of the Ottawa Community Foundation, Chair of its Grants committee and a member of the Governance Committee.  She is a board director of the Vanier Institute of the Family, as well as Ottawa Chamberfest where she is Vice Chair and Chair of the Governance Committee. She also co-chairs the Program Committee of the International Women’s Federation.

Mary-Cate Garden

Mary-Cate Garden is a Priest in the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa where she has held posts in both rural and urban parishes. Prior to her ordination in 2016, she was an archaeologist for more than twenty-five years, working in academia, museums, and elsewhere in the public sector. As a priest she has a call to urban ministry and has held volunteer and placement posts with day programmes in Toronto and worked alongside people who are vulnerably housed and may be living with addiction or other health issues. In Cornwall, Mary-Cate was part of the working group that helped establish Centre 105 and served as the clergy liaison. Mary-Cate has a long history of volunteering in the arts. Within the Diocese, Mary-Cate sits on a number of committees including Diocesan Council and Property and Finance. 

Carolyn Faught

Carolyn Faught is a wife, a mother of two daughters, and a practicing physician. Carolyn grew up in Ottawa and studied at McGill University. Carolyn is a hematologist and has been on staff at the Ottawa Hospital since 1998. Carolyn has spent her career taking care of people with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma; which has been challenging, rewarding, and a privilege. Carolyn has also been involved in teaching medical students about blood.

Carolyn's spare time is spent with her church community, reading, spending time with her dog, or pursuing various sporty endeavours. She is passionate about being in nature and happiest either hiking on a mountain, skiing on a forest trail, or paddling in a canoe. 

Carolyn is invested in advancing equality and justice, and feels both a desire and sense of duty to give back to her community. Carolyn looks forward to her role on the Board at Cornerstone, with hopes to learn from her Board colleagues and support vulnerable community members.

Susan Smandych

The Rev. R. Susan Smandych (she/her) serves as a Priest in the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, ministering in Arnprior and Renfrew. Before her ordination, she worked for over a decade as an engineer and program manager with a global consulting firm and later held senior leadership roles with international non-governmental organizations for 15 years. Her work took her to more than 60 countries, including roles as a missionary in Indonesia, Country Director in Timor-Leste, and Director of Program Management and Compliance overseeing health programs across Africa, Asia, and Haiti.

After returning to Canada and completing her Master of Divinity at Trinity College, Susan was ordained and served in several urban parishes in Winnipeg. Her passion for safe housing and ending homelessness for women and gender-diverse people continues to guide her ministry. She also serves on the Board of L’Arche Arnprior, is a member of the Diocese’s Risk Management Committee, and enjoys painting in her spare time.
